The concept of English Regions is not a recent idea. C.B. Fawcett published " The Provinces of England" in 1921. In February 1917 the map shown below was published in the Geographical Journal.

It is interesting to contrast and compare the ideas originating in the 'Edwardian' era with contemporary thinking on this subject. See below also a recent map showing the electoral regions used for the 1999 European Elections.
